WhatsApp marketing for Shopify: setup guide

A practical guide to connecting Shopify context with relevant WhatsApp conversations, clear permissions and controlled costs.

The short answer

WhatsApp marketing for Shopify uses the WhatsApp Business Platform to send relevant messages to a store’s audience. A sound setup connects store context, audience permission, approved messaging and a team that can respond.

Start with a customer moment

Choose one job before you choose a campaign. A shopper may need a product answer, a reminder about a checkout, or a useful update after ordering. Those are different moments and should not share the same audience, timing or message.

Begin with the store problem you can describe clearly. If customers ask where their order is, connect order context to support. If opted-in shoppers leave checkouts, design a short recovery flow. If existing customers ask for new arrivals, build a segment around that preference.

Make permission explicit

In Optimato, recorded permission is specific to the channel. Entering a phone number during checkout does not authorize a marketing campaign, and permission to receive email does not become WhatsApp permission. This is a product safeguard, not a substitute for reviewing current provider policies and local requirements.

Tell people what they are signing up for, record the source and time of that choice, and make withdrawal straightforward. Before each send, recheck that permission still exists. A campaign scheduled yesterday should respect an opt-out received today.

Connect the right pieces

You need a Shopify store, the necessary data permissions, a WhatsApp Business setup and the ability to handle incoming replies. Use official APIs and understand which approvals apply to your account, number and templates.

In Optimato, the Shopify catalog, customers, orders and checkouts provide context. The messaging channel has its own setup and status. A store connection alone does not mean WhatsApp is ready to send. Check both before enabling a flow.

Write a useful message

Give the customer a clear reason for the message, one useful next step and a way to respond. Avoid an offer simply because a template has space for one. A helpful answer about size or shipping may be more relevant than another discount.

Keep your team ready for the reply. Campaigns and support should share context, so someone who asks a question does not have to explain the story again. Review the audience, excluded customers and estimated costs before scheduling.

Measure the whole outcome

Look at delivery, responses, opt-outs, attributed orders and costs together. A high message volume alone says little about value. The cost of messaging and incentives belongs beside credited revenue.

Attribution says which message received credit under a chosen rule. It does not prove the order would have been lost without that message. A suitable holdout experiment can help evaluate incremental effects, but only when the sample and design support a conclusion.
